We are very excited to announce that Scottsdale has a new sister city ! On December 9, 2013, Scottsdale’s City Council voted unanimously to establish a sister city relationship with Uasin Gishu County in Kenya.   As this has also been approved by Uasin Gishu’s Governor and Legislative Council , it is official – Uasin Gishu is Scottsdale’s 7th sister city !

Uasin Gishu is one of Kenya’s 47 counties and is located in the western part of Kenya, in the former Rift Valley Province.   The county seat is Eldoret, Kenya’s fourth largest city, with a population of about 300,000 and with a modern international airport.   The total population of the county is about 900,000.  Uasin Gishu is located on a high plateau, with a cool and temperate climate.  It has primarily an agricultural economy, featuring corn, wheat, passion fruit, oranges, and dairy.

Uasin Gishu is also famous for being the home of the world’s greatest male and female middle distance and long distance runners.  Major marathons around the world and Olympic medium and long distance races have been dominated by Uasin Gishu athletes for the past 50 years.

We believe that this relationship has a great opportunity to generate exchange activities in education, health care, youth activities, economic development, music, dance, athletics, and environmental stewardship, and municipal governance.

In the coming months we will share will you much additional information about Uasin Gishu, as well as opportunities for you to become involved.    Watch our website,, for additional information and pictures.  We will host a program at Scottsdale’s Mustang Library at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 21st – which will include presentations on visiting each of our sister cities, including Uasin Gishu.  Finally, an official delegation will visit Scottsdale sometime in March, with plenty of opportunities for community interaction with our guests.
