INFORMATION PROVIDED BY SCOTTSDALE SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION
After several years of an ongoing relationship, Marrakech officially became Scottsdale’s sister city in January, 2012. With a population of nearly one million, Marrakech is the fourth largest city in Morocco and is a major tourist destination for many Europeans. Morocco is geographically the closest African nation to the United States and was the first country to recognize the United States’ independence in December, 1777. Founded nearly a thousand years ago, Marrakech is a vibrant and exotic city, with its rose colored earthen buildings, wealth of cultural monuments, and labyrinthine souks (markets) set against the snow capped Atlas Mountains. Scottsdale and Marrakech are both desert cities and share interests in climate, tourism, cultural heritage and golf management. Activities with Marrakech include cultural, medical technology, educational and student exchanges.
