Located near the Swiss capital of Bern at the base of the majestic Swiss Alps between two glacier fed lakes, Lake Thun and Brienz, is Interlaken, Switzerland. With a population of 6,000, Interlaken is a small, rare jewel offering tremendous natural beauty as well as the best of Swiss cultural activities. Take in spectacular views from the Top of Europe, the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe.  Similar to Scottsdale as an international tourist destination, Interlaken boasts some of the finest restaurants and shopping, along with five-star hotels offering all spa amenities. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking, windsurfing, boating and golf in the summer. Interlaken is a premier winter destination because of the many activities such as skiing and snowboarding.  Rail and bus transfers will take the skier from his front door to 45 railways, gondolas, or chairlifts to over 200 km of ski trails.  Adventure sports enthusiasts will enjoy many activities such as paragliding, canyoneering, rock climbing and skydiving.

Since becoming a Scottsdale Sister City in 1999, a bi-annual school-to-school youth exchange has taken place.  Over 100 Scottsdale students have had the opportunity to live with host families for two weeks in October, attending school at the Interlaken Gymnasium, a college prep high school.  In April, Swiss students return to stay with their Scottsdale sisters and brothers for two weeks, attending school and seeing sites and experiencing the Western culture of Scottsdale and Arizona.  Sixteen students have been selected for the October 2015 Youth Ambassador Exchange and have been attending monthly training sessions for the past year.  Their Swiss host students will return to stay with them in April of 2016.
