Executive Chef and Partner of Domenica, Pizza Domenica, Shaya
New Orleans, Louisiana
Alon Shaya, Executive Chef and Partner of Domenica, Pizza Domenica and Shaya, discovered his passion for cooking at an early age, spending most of his time in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother in Philadelphia.
In 2003, Shaya moved to New Orleans where he began training under Chef John Besh. In the days following Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Italy to explore his passion for Italian cooking and in 2009, he opened Domenica, a regional Italian restaurant in New Orleans’ historic Roosevelt Hotel. With the growing popularity of Domenica, Shaya opened Pizza Domenica, a casual spinoff, in uptown New Orleans in the spring of 2014.
After several visits to Israel, Chef Shaya was inspired to go back to his roots of cooking and in February 2015, he opened his namesake Israeli restaurant. Shaya is an innovative restaurant with a warm and welcoming approach to the dining culture inspired by Chef Alon Shaya’s Israeli upbringing and New Orleans’ local ingredients.
Domenica has earned numerous accolades including being named a 2012 Top Restaurant by Food & Wine and one of Gayot’s hottest restaurants in 2014 as well as garnering attention in Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, and Food52. In 2010, Esquire Magazine named Chef Shaya a “Chef to Watch.” In 2015, he was awarded the James Beard Foundation’s Award for “Best Chef – South,” was named one of “50 most influential American Jews in America” by The Forward , as well as one of Tasting Table’s “46 Chefs Who Ruled the Kitchen in 2015.” Additionally, Louisiana Cookin’ named him “Chef of the Year” while Esquire named Shaya “The Best New Restaurant in America” in 2015.
